They have a lot of things that Shop-Rite in Flemington doesn't have or won't sell. Stop-and-Shop does need to upgrade its offering and store design though, to keep up with competitors such as Shop-Rite or Wegmans before it is too late. On a broader corporate level, they do seem to be a company, that is trying to just keep the blood flowing rather than seeking to reinvent itself for the longer haul.
They have a good selection and store layout is good but it is clear that they do not take care of and maintain the store. One example would be the completely trashed cart return structure in the parking lot.
This store is best thought of as a giant 7-11. It's great to pop in for soda and chips but to plan a week of meals it is a disaster! The produce is average, the meat dept is often out of stock in basic stuff and the fish dept is like a third world country with little variety, old, all farm raised or prevent frozen. Management is not present and prepared food too little too late. With new stores finally coming to market the "out of stock and shop" is doomed. The only thing it has going for it is location.
I normally have a pleasant experience at this store, there's a large selection and you find things you don't normally find at the local Walmart/shop-rite. The problem with this store isn't the variety or the prices/sales but the staff. They've introduced the new "do it yourself" scanners, which is great for just a few things. But when you have a cart full of groceries and a toddler with you...sometimes old fashioned is better. Now today I went in, shopped for about two hours with my soon to be three year old and 65 year old mother. I went to one of the TWO lines open with a cashier and was not greeted even with a smile. The teenage boy was extremely rude off the bat when I asked if he could look up my card. "I don't know how to do that! YOU have to type it in"...uh okay then. No problem. As I'm frantically putting items up on the belt, my mother is watching my daughter and keeping her occupied. The boy, David at register 5, is mindlessly ringing things up to the point now food is piling up at the end. At one point I was expecting him to kindly start to bag, as most cashiers do. But no, David is determined to create a food mountain at the expense of my stuff. My mother starts to bag and I'm just disgusted with this boys attitude. I not so politely ask him to slow down and give my mother a chance to catch up. He starts to bag and my mom insists it's fine but is it really? Is this how you treat a woman clearly your elder with a toddler no less? The exchange between David and I continued to be extremely unpleasant and I'm seriously disturbed at the fact that he would be hired to interact with young moms exhausted from long shopping trips, children in tow/elderly people/even just humans in general. If all the cashiers are like this kid, they need to do a major re-hiring process and/or close all lanes with actual people. I know it may sound crazy but when I spend over 300$ a shopping trip sometimes I would appreciate someone being a little helpful especially when theyre directly paid to do so.
I have been going here since it open as an Edwards long ago. A good solid supermarket. Would be 5 Stars if they we're more consistent in their lunch time hot selections
